Holy Land Pilgrimage 2011

August 24

We arrived very late on Tuesday night after 14 hours on the road. The city was alive and buzzing with the sights sounds and smells at the end of prayers for Ramadan. Sadly we were all far too tired to be more than mere spectators. Having been met with what was described as a "light meal", several courses later we headed for bed full to bursting! It had been dark when we arrived so I was curious as to what sights would meet us at sunrise next day. I was not disappointed!

Golden Dome JerusalemVarun in the Garden of GethsemeneAfter a walk down the Palm Sunday route from the Mount we gathered for Mass in the small church of Dominus Flevit. As Frs Mark and Neil began the service with the Holy City clearly visible through the decorative arched window (left) it became clear that the importance and beauty of the city was in the history of this meeting of beliefs and faiths. The image of the Golden Dome visible through the window containing the image of a host and chalice with the altar cross appearing almost superimposed seemed to summarise the very essence of the city.

On then to Gethsemane (right) where despite the noise and bustle of a city now wide awake we were able to pray and reflect on the reading of the Agony in the Garden.

Throughout the day so far and as we progressed towards Abou Gosh, thought to be the site of Emmaus, our local Christian guide, Usama, spoke to us of the challenges facing the ever declining Christian presence. These "living stones" are aware of the privilege they enjoy living in this Holy place but feel sadness that many feel forced to leave. They are crying out for the support of the rest of the Christian World in helping them maintain a presence in this land.

At the end of our first full day we are sitting on the roof terrace enjoying a quiet evening drink looking out over the city walls. A tired but happy group of new friends eagerly anticipating the many experiences still awaiting us.
